Les Voyages de Gulliver : Gulliver's Travels

Maxime Aulio composed Les Voyages de Gulliver (Gulliver’s Travels) for the concert band of the Conservatoire National de Région in Toulouse (France) conducted by Jean-Guy Olive. The first performance took place in Toulouse (Auditorium Saint-Pierre des Cuisines) on April 25, 2001. The Anglo-Irish author Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) took about six years to complete his epic tale of adventure. The creative storyline, clear writing and subtlety of Gulliver’s Travels have been engaging readers for generations. This literary travel between reason and foolishness was Maxime Aulio’s inspiration for this piece. Each of the four movements of this suite is a review of Gulliver’sadventures, resembling the effect of a kaleidoscope, which juxtaposes small fragments of colour in a linear pattern.

The Three Musketeers, Op. 8 : Les Trois Mousquetaires

Les Trois Mousquetaires (The Three Musketeers) was commissioned by the Miraphone company for the Miraphone Tuba Quartett and the Musique des Gardiens de la Paix (Paris, France). It was premièred in Guebwiller (France), on 28 June 2003 by its dedicatees.Even if you have never read a line of the mythical novel The Three Musketeers (1844) by Alexandre Dumas, father, you will at least have heard of the “four invincibles”; four extraordinary names - D’Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis - and one unique motto “All for one, and one for all.” The musical texture of Les Trois Mousquetaires is focused on specific elements of a character’s personality rather thanon its influence on the book's plot. Maxime Aulio has largely turned his attention on D’Artagnan, the sensitive, romantic and perfect gentleman who is easily charmed by women such as the gentle Constance Bonacieux and the perfidious Milady de Winter whose beguiling beauty seduced him. The first movement - D’Artagnan - is true to the character of the young provincial noble of the Gascony region: heroic and enthusiastic in all circumstances. The second movement entitled Constance Bonacieux, is romantic, delicate and passionate. The third and last movement is as duplicitous as the bewitching femme fatale its reveals: Milady de Winter.

Tribute to a Maestro : Variations on a theme by Jean-Philippe Rameau

Tribute to a Maestro is an homage to Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683–1764), one of the most important French Baroque composers. Rameau was a hugely significant composer, organist, harpsichordist and music teacher: he also published several authoritative books on music theory. Jan de Haan based this tribute on a theme from ‘Les Sauvages’ (The Savages), the fourth act of Rameau’s ballet-opera, Les Indes Galantes (The Amorous Indies). The work begins with two variations, whereupon the striking theme can be heard. After a short intermezzo, four more variations follow, of which the last one is composed in Baroque style. T-Bone Concerto (Complete Edition)

The T-Bone Concerto was Johan de Meij's first composition for solo instrument and symphonic band. It consists of three movements called respectively 'Rare', 'Medium' and 'Well Done'. In addition to the solo trombone, an important role has been allotted to a kind of chamber music ensemble within the band. This group introduces new thematic material and accompanies the soloist, thus creating a delightful transparant accompaniment. The ensemble consists of a double wind quintet (2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 french horns and 2 bassoons) plus a cor anglais and a double bass. Parts I and II are written in the A-B-A form and allow the soloist to display both the technical and thelyrical characteristics of the instrument. Part III at first develops into a kind of neo-baroque style using the thematic material of the first and second movement, and finally leads to a triumphant finale and a virtuoso conclusion.

Works For Mixed Choir and Orchestra

This volume of “Œuvres complètes de Gabriel Fauré” contains Fauré’s four secular choral works in their orchestral arrangements, namely “Les Djinns”, “La Naissance de Vénus”, “Madrigal”, and “Pavane”. These works were composed between 1876 and 1887; thereafter Fauré wrote choral compositions based only on sacred texts. The first three works are presented here for the first time in a full score edition, previously having been published only in their versions with piano accompaniment. This edition is therefore the first to present the works with an authoritative musical text based on the careful study of the sources.“Les Djinns” (1876-76) for mixed choir and orchestrais based on the famous poem by Victor Hugo first published in the collection “Les Orientales”, while “La Naissance de Vénus” (1882) for soloists, choir and orchestra is based on a text by Paul Collin. “Madrigal”, the orchestral version of which cannot be dated with certainty (around 1891, for a quartet of soloists or choir) has been composed after a poem by Armand Silvestre, and the famous “Pavane”, originally composed for orchestra and only later supplemented with a text by Symbolist poet Robert de Montesquiou, is presented here in an elegant, graceful version with female choir.

Ballet Music

This volume is the second of three planned volumes of ballet music composed between 1759 and 1769 in Vienna. They represent only a small portion of Viennese ballet music attributed to Gluck for which musical sources have been preserved. The volumes form a compendium that offers comprehensive editorial coverage of Gluck’s activities as “Compositore von der Music zu denen Balletten” (composer of the music to the ballets). The present volume contains compositions from the years 1759 and 1760 (and, accordingly, the 1759/60 and 1760/61 seasons).The ballets have been passed down only as sets of parts. They were commissioned by Count Joseph Adam Prince of Schwarzenberg andoriginated around the time of the premiere performances from the workshops of Viennese copyists. Today, they are housed in the State Regional Archive Ceský Krumlov (with the exception of the sinfonia for “Le Prix de la Danse”, which has also been handed down as a composition by Ignaz Holzbauer.)The ballet music works consist of a series of mostly short but occasionally lengthier movements that can be repeated or joined into larger musical units. “Les Corsaires” and “Le Prix de la Danse” were both premiered in December 1759 at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna with choreographies by Charles Bernardi, while Gasparo Angioloni most likely created the choreographies for “Le Berger magicien”, “Les Miquelets espagnols”, and “Le Naufrage” (premiered in 1759 at the Burgtheater), as well as those for “Les Faunes” and “Les Trois Couleurs” (premiered in 1760 at the same venue).The two Bernardi ballets are the only examples for which scenic descriptions have been recorded in the chronicle of theatrical performances by court dancer and ballet master Philipp Gumpenhuber. However, telling titles and works with similar contents help to reconstruct the thematic orientation of the respective ballets.
