This arrangement (or edition) for brass band will give the possibility for more performances of this fine work by Hovland. The composer, before his death, examined my work and made no suggestions for changes, and his approving comments were complimentary and encouraging. The work was originally written for Concert Band in 1966 as Op. 54a to St. Olaf College Band in the US. It was transcribed in 1967 for symphony orchestra as Op. 54b by the composer himself. The challenges in arranging the piece for brass band were mostly concerned with satisfactorily covering the upper register used by piccolo, flutes and clarinets, and while there are wonderful brass players around who have amazing high registers, I have aimed this edition at a level achievable by reasonably good brass band players who are willing to give time and effort into the proper preparation and delivery of the music. Having worked on this new edition with a top-class brass band, I think it sounds wonderful and interestingly different to the original. Besides the obvious differences of tone-colour and absent high notes, I have used in my scoring, the option for using a vibraphone in place of a celeste. Vaughan Williams, in his Variations for brass band writes for celeste, but because the instrument is quite rare, performances have been mostly given using a glockenspiel- but this, of course sounds two octaves higher than it was intended. I think that vibraphone and brass is an excellent combination and recommend it without hesitation in this piece. Every detail of articulation and dynamic has been considered, so in order to keep the integrity of the music, please do not change anything in the name of “interpretation”. Gemini Concerto was commissioned by and written for Ryukoku University (Japan), André Henry and Shoichiro Hokazono. Set in three movements, the concerto aims to explore the close relationship, as solo instruments, between the trumpet and euphonium, exploiting the many common factors between the two as well as the subtly different characteristics they possess in terms of both lyrical and rhythmic playing. The first movement is a bustling toccata and the second movement is lyrical and improvisatory in nature. Faure Motets and Hymns / Messe de l'Association des pêcheurs de Villerville N 60a / Messe basse N 163 / Christmas Song Arrangements This volume of Gabriel Fauré's sacred music is divided into three parts: besides the motets and hymns (17 works), it contains the two well-known harmonisations of French Christmas carols and the two masses, the “Messe basse” (Low mass) of 1907 and the “Messe de l'association des pêcheurs de Villerville”. Also published for the first time is the original 1881 version of the “Messe de pêcheurs”. The genesis of the “Messe de l'association des pêcheurs”, which was composed in Villerville (Normandy) in collaboration with Fauré’s friend André Messager, is the central theme of the introductory text. In addition, Helga Schauerte-Maubouet focuses on the relationship between the characteristics of the choir organ at the church of La Madeleine as well as the composition and performance practice aspects of the motets. A first in this edition is the inclusion of the double bass part in the scores of some of these works. Although this part does not consequently appear in the musical text of the first editions of these motets, it is substantiated by the autographs from the Madeleine church archives. Its integration makes it possible to restore the practice that was common in this church during Fauré’s lifetime. By means of many other details, the new readings of the complete edition finally offer a reliable musical text of jewels such as the “Cantique de Jean Racine”. Urtext edition from the Gabriel Fauré. Tales and Myths of Gothia

Jerker Johansson has lived in Gothenburg, on the Swedish West Coast, since 1984, and is deeply interested in the history of the country. Gothia is the most southern part of Sweden, and Gothenburg, which was founded in 1621, is since many years an important centre for trade and shipping. Old paintings of the harbour with its gigantic sailing ships gave impulse to the heroic character of the piece. The opening fanfare is followed by a lively allegro, which eventually leads to a calm section, containing reminiscences of the fanfare. The cornets introduce a cantabile theme, and a dance reminding of the Renaissance precede a recapitulation of the allegro theme. Tales and Myths of Gothia was originally composed for concert band in 2017. The brass band version was premiered on 26 April 2019 during Oslo Brass festival by Uffes Blås Brassband, conducted by Andreas Kratz.

Ravel's ballet, Daphnis and Chloé, was commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev and premiered with the Ballets Russes in Paris in 1912. The ballet is now rarely performed, but its Suite No. 2 remains popular. It consists of three movements, Lever du jour, Pantomime and Danse générale, that are played without interruption. Tohru Takahashi makes no compromises in his transcription, which calls for at least 60 musicians and an optional mixed chorus!

Works For Mixed Choir and Orchestra

This volume of “Œuvres complètes de Gabriel Fauré” contains Fauré’s four secular choral works in their orchestral arrangements, namely “Les Djinns”, “La Naissance de Vénus”, “Madrigal”, and “Pavane”. These works were composed between 1876 and 1887; thereafter Fauré wrote choral compositions based only on sacred texts. The first three works are presented here for the first time in a full score edition, previously having been published only in their versions with piano accompaniment. This edition is therefore the first to present the works with an authoritative musical text based on the careful study of the sources.“Les Djinns” (1876-76) for mixed choir and orchestrais based on the famous poem by Victor Hugo first published in the collection “Les Orientales”, while “La Naissance de Vénus” (1882) for soloists, choir and orchestra is based on a text by Paul Collin. “Madrigal”, the orchestral version of which cannot be dated with certainty (around 1891, for a quartet of soloists or choir) has been composed after a poem by Armand Silvestre, and the famous “Pavane”, originally composed for orchestra and only later supplemented with a text by Symbolist poet Robert de Montesquiou, is presented here in an elegant, graceful version with female choir.
