Referring to the 1975 blockbuster Jaws, director Steven Spielberg states that John Williams' music “was clearly responsible for half the success of the movie.” This suite features two of the signature musicalsequences. In “Out to Sea,” the trio of shark hunters led by police chief Martin Brody (played by Roy Scheider) heads into open water to find the menacing beast. This is followed by the “Shark Cage Fugue,”a classically inspired and sophisticated accompaniment to a tense underwater scene in which Hooper (portrayed by Richard Dreyfuss) comes face-to-face with the great white in an all-too-fragile suspended cage.

Tribute to a Maestro : Variations on a theme by Jean-Philippe Rameau

Tribute to a Maestro is an homage to Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683–1764), one of the most important French Baroque composers. Rameau was a hugely significant composer, organist, harpsichordist and music teacher: he also published several authoritative books on music theory. Jan de Haan based this tribute on a theme from ‘Les Sauvages’ (The Savages), the fourth act of Rameau’s ballet-opera, Les Indes Galantes (The Amorous Indies). The work begins with two variations, whereupon the striking theme can be heard. After a short intermezzo, four more variations follow, of which the last one is composed in Baroque style. The success of Bill Whelan’s Riverdance evolved from a concept for music and dance that he established earlier with The Seville Suite, his first major orchestral composition. The Seville Suite was commissioned for Ireland’s National Day at the World Expo 1992 in Seville, Spain. Through the score, Whelan tells the story of legendary Irish war hero Red Hugh O’Donnell. At a mere 21 years of age, O’Donnell successfully led a rebellion against the English government in 1593. Johan de Meij’s arrangement is a 13-minute adaptation featuring highlights from the original suite.
