Aurora

Aurora was the Greek goddess of dawn. Through the ages dawn has had a significant spiritual meaning - daylight conquering the ominous darkness of the night. This exciting work by Thomas Doss uses musical imagery to reflect the meaning of dawn by cultures throughout the world. The emphasis lies on oriental sounds - symbolizing the daily aurora in the Far East.

The Colors of Tali : Die Farben von Tali

Tali is a thirteen-year-old Israeli girl who has grown up amidst the religious conflicts between Palestinians, Christians, and Jews. Thomas Doss was so touched by a poem she wrote, he decided to set it to music. The poem and the music describe the world from a child’s perspective, a child that has grown up with war and tries to express things she cannot yet fully understand.

Theoretical physicist and Nobel prize winner Albert Einstein (1879 – 1955) developed the theory of relativity, one of the basic tenets of modern physics: who doesn’t know his formula E = mc2? Luceafarul : The Evening Star

Luceafarul (The Evening Star) is based on an old Romanian legend about a princess who falls in love with the evening star. Eventually the star returns her love, and one night he climbs down in human form to her. However, their love failsbecause of his realisation that such a connection between heaven and earth is impossible. Thomas Doss has translated this romantic, touching love drama into an equally dramatic and emotional musical work. Deeply moving!

Window to the Sun : In the Heart of the Alps

The Tyrol–South Tyrol–Trentino Euroregion was founded in 1998 with the aim of promoting cross-border cooperation between the parts of Tyrol that since 1918 have been divided up over Austria and Italy. This work for concert band marks the 25th anniversary of the Euroregion. In this varied composition, Thomas Doss has used three local folk songs as a symbol of the individual regions: La Montanara (Trentino), Wohl ist die Welt so groß und weit (South Tyrol) and Das Schönste auf der Welt (Tyrol).

Laudate : frei nach Worten aus Franz von Assisi's Sonnengesang, for Soprano Solo, Mixed Choir and Concert Band

The work presented here, Laudate for solo soprano, mixed choir and wind band, draws inspiration from The Canticle of the Sun (Il Cantico di Frate Sole), written by Francis of Assisi shortly before his death. In this prayer, Saint Francis praises the sun, the moon and the stars, together with the whole of creation, immortalising them in his text. Thomas Doss has set the first words of each stanza to music in this modernistic pop-style composition: “Laudato si, mi signore”. An impressive addition to the repertoire for band and vocals!

A Little Stress Music : Satire in Four Parts

A Little Stress Music was commissioned by the Lenzing Werkskapelle from Austria and comprises of four sections. ‘Rush Hour’ depicts a Friday evening during which everyone wants to get home after work. Unfortunately, traffic jams and gridlock stand in the way! In ‘Promenade Waltz’ you can picture an evening walk along the beautiful lakeside, then a glass of wine loosens you up leading to the third movement: ‘Romance’, which starts with a promising conversation…The funny finale ‘Monday Morning’ brings you back to reality and the score provides the option of the band applauding itself for a job well done! A humorous and joyful new piece by Thomas Doss!

Austrian Overture : Die Österreichische

Austria is an industrious country. During the last century—which was characterized by extreme changes—the hard-working and ambitious people achieved a great deal, enduring two world wars and numerous political skirmishes. Despite all the problems involved in a change from a dual monarchy to a small state, Austria has found its independence. With his Austrian Overture, Thomas Doss looks toward the future. The first part of the composition provides an optimistic outlook; along with the happiness and energy, some musical humor is also present: while the horns powerfully express joy, small yodeling melodies sound throughout. As the rhythm continues insearch of new ways to go, catchy tunes compete to be heard. However, in addition to the energetic, diligent Austria, there’s also the quiet landscape where one can enjoy repose and beauty. These aspects - as well as the freedom of spirit and cultural life -are conveyed in the second part of the work through the surprising linking of chords, romantic phrasing, and tender melodies. But life never stands still: creativity, ambition, and work are the driving forces of our existence. Embracing this thought, a reprise of the first part provides a compelling ending.

Panoptikum : Scenes from Lake Constance

Armin Schaer commissioned this work in his search for a new piece for the tuba. More specifically, he wanted a work that showed off the versatility of this splendid instrument, written in a musical style that is both fresh and modern, while not banishing the orchestra to a simple supporting role. Taking all these specifications into account, Thomas Doss created a work that allows stylistic leaps and is fun, exciting, romantic, and virtuosic, but does not lose sight of the thread that connects the opening measures to the very last.Armin Schaer describes his Panoptikum as follows:Panoptikum is a show of appreciation for my beautiful home and community at LakeConstance, an eventful life, the people that have enriched this life, and a fascinating instrument: the tuba. This work musically embodies the many different moods found around theBodensee - cheerfulness and melancholy, departures and longing, calm and agitation. The roles of the soloist and the orchestra were consciously crafted in a way that does not follow the usual conventions of the genre. The work should spark emotions, address broad segments of listeners, and persuade them of the tuba’s ability to be a solo instrument as well as the richness symphonic wind ensembles have to offer. I hope this work enriches the lives of all the soloists and orchestras that cross its path, as well as everyone in the audience who gets to partake!
