In the Cross of Christ I Glory There is a rustic sturdiness in this refreshing arrangement. The well-known tune floats above a lower voice drone creating an engaging effect. Piano and handchimes add sparkle and texture and provide poetic context for this time-honored hymn. Score and Parts for Handbells (3-4 oct.) available as a digital download. SEK 65.00 1
Winter Time The drone of the bells, the whispers from the choir, the Stevenson text, set the mood for winter. The choir's harmonies dance around the central tonality like a cold wind, always returning respectfully to the earth. A lovely piecefor the fall concert for advanced high school and college treble ensembles. Medium to difficult. SEK 70.00 1
Aiken Drum Like most popular Scottish folksongs, this one is rooted in history, but now has been transformed into a nonsense song. Aiken Drum, with his clothes made of tasty food, is creatively portrayed here in this clever edition withScottish drone sounds, the melody passing from part to part, and underlying snare drum. A cheerful encore or folk selection! SEK 65.00 1
Mary Dolen: Circle Dance A lively dance tune with a Celtic flair! Mary Dolen's solo for intermediate pianists provides a terrific study in dynamic control. There are both frequent and subtle changes from mezzo-forte to mezzo-piano and piano, as well as furthter rhythmic phrasing with the left hand imitating a drum or a bagpipe drone, underneath a flowing right hand. Amazing Grace Flute, oboe, and hand drum introduce and accompany this anthem, which uses the traditional text but the tune GREENVILLE, an early-American melody in a flowing 6/8 meter. The vocal parts are often spare and elegant to go with the lineage of the tune; the middle verse has the tenor/bass section functioning as a drone/ostinato. A key change leads to the final, almost rollicking verse "When we've been there ten thousand years." Fun and different. SEK 73.00 1
Divi Sirmi Kumelini This traditional Latvian a cappella selection appears to be all about horses--horses eager to run--and run they do! However, it is really a mythological song about heavenly affairs and two grey steeds with their golden saddles and silver harnesses. An occasional 7/8 measure keeps us on our toes, as a variety of percussion instruments add to the excitement. A pedal-tone drone, moving from part to part, keeps the energy high and the pitch in check. SEK 67.00 1
Pange Lingua In this concert setting, the voices are used as a means to create a meditative dwelling for prayer. The low voices drone (using nasal resonance) to symbolize a sense of eternity suspended. The isolated duet figures in the higher voices color the text, bringing certain verses to the foreground. All voices climax in extended adoration and work harmonically to create the sensation of suspended awe. The closing moment sreturn to a meditative prayer-like state, yet suggest that something has transformed since the beginning of the piece, or perhaps that the piece was only a continuation.
