Commissioned by the Somerset, England based charity, Churchill Music!, The Same Flame was inspired by Pierre de Coubertin’s ideals of Olympism which gave rise to the modern Olympic and Paralympic values: Respect, Excellence, Friendship, Courage, Equality, Determination and Inspiration. These seven values are celebrated in five movements, so four of them had to double up – Friendship with Equality and Courage with Determination. Each movement is scored for slightly different choral forces, so the work is varied. Also individual movements may suit different choirs giving the opportunity for individual performance or collaboration between choirs. All five movements of The SameFlame are published as individual octavos. A complete vocal score is available on request from the publishers.“Excellence” makes the not always popular point that excellence is not achieved overnight, nor by accident. While spelling out the ‘doggedness, diligence, discipline, [and] drudgery’ that go into achieving ‘poetry in motion’, the song also celebrates the attainment of those who achieve excellence and comes to the inescapable conclusion that the ‘unbegrudged drudgery’ is worth it! The (sometime tongue-twisting) language is very colourful and engaging and, as the final movement of “The Same Flame”, the music is equally exciting and explosive.

A complete vocal score is available on request from the publishers.A slower and more poignant movement, Respectfully Yours takes the form of a letter from those who have long been disenfranchised and excluded – they could be one of a number of groups! – and who, though now welcomed into the fold, cannot take acceptance for granted. The memory of rejection is raw and recent. With polite reserve underwritten by passion, they respectfully reaffirm their claim to be ‘of the same flame’.

A complete vocal score is available on request from the publishers.Inspired by the title of a book by Mary Ann Radmacher, ‘Courage doesn’t always roar’ , Guts and Grace considers courage and determination as essentially private qualities, mothered by dark necessity, but on occasion needing to step up publicly, especially in the sporting arena, and ‘roar’. This movement is intense and charged with emotion and gives opportunity for sections of the choir to shine individually, as well as a beautiful, soaring soprano solo section in the middle.

Mark Adamo: Same Train - SATB A Cappella

Composed for Craig Hella Johnson and Conspirare, the composer writes: Same Train in many arrangements seems to sing of good news coming. But - maybe it was the relentlessness, the conclusiveness of the title phrase - I wondered if what was coming might actually have been a funeral train: coming for our sister, our mother, and soon enough for us too. I thought of so many other spirituals which sing about dark truths in bright music, and wondered if I couldn't use the imitative, ch-ch-train ostinato to honour that willfully smiling aspect of the piece, while also freeing the harmonies to make audible the more disconsolate feelings underneath.
